Turtles have existed millions of years ago since the Mesozoic era, witnessed the evolution, existence and demise of the dinosaurs and possess many species, small and large. The largest turtle probably known is the leatherback sea turtle which is thought to grow up to 80 inches long. Turtles have long fascinated people of many cultures and are often used to symbolize wisdom and long life and in some cultures, representing a form of protection, strength and stability. There is a certain amount of respect that is given to the turtle which is thought to be a wise creature, choosing to exercise its actions patiently and over time. Sadly, the turtle has also been a subject of much abuse by mankind. In China and Southeast Asia, turtles are sometimes venerated in religious ceremonies but these cultures still allow the consumption of turtle flesh and eggs, while turtle parts have been used widely in traditional medicines. Another turtle species, the Hawksbill turtle, have been killed mercilessly for their decorative shells for use in the jewelry trade. All this has served to affect our ecosystem causing an imbalance in their natural habitat. If we ardently pursue conservation efforts, we should also remember the part of the sea turtle in fostering the balance of the greater eco-system. of these creatures. The sale of turtles and tortoises should not be allowed and the survival of these creatures should be protected. The marine turtle for instance, is being threatened due to excessive poaching, pollution and disease. Turtles influence us in many ways because they have been used as symbols across many cultures and have resulted in many artistic creations from unique turtle gifts such as statues to key safes to doorstops and unique forms of garden statuary, yet they are also facing threat of survival by the same people who woo them.
